THE VILULA TEA GARDEN

...it was a little tea room in my memories...ladies wearing white gloves and pretty hats; soft and mended old linens on the tables; and heirloom roses in crystal vases....lovely.

Last Day Before Christmas Break...

The children at school are so excited! The parties are tomorrow...cake, candies, and more more more! I need a BREAK! It's not as though I don't enjoy my job, but some quiet time away from children and anticipation of Santa and what am I getting for Christmas....sometimes its too much. Of course, I don't have any grandchildren, either...think it will change then? Maybe...

December 12, 2009

I had a wonderful time shopping with my special Sister on the Fly friends at Lenox Square today...Anita, Bridget, Karens 1 and 2, Sharon, Marvene, Susan, Nan, Laura and her two friends that have become mine...hope I haven't left anyone out...then we had a wonderful meal at Maggiano's. This is our Christmas lunch that has become a tradition of the Southern Sister's.
This is just the way I feel right now! Time for a nap!

Clean Green From The Queen of Clean-Cleaning tips, products and more from Linda Cobb

Five must-have cleaning products
White vinegar
Use white vinegar to remove heavy soap scum and mineral deposits from showers, tubs, and sinks. Warm the vinegar and put in a spray bottle. Spray on showers, tubs and sinks and let soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Then use a nylon scrubbing sponge to remove scum. Respray if necessary.
To remove mineral deposits from around drains, close drain and pour in enough white vinegar to cover the drain area. Let soak overnight, scrub with a nylon scrubbing sponge, drain vinegar and rinse.
To remove scum and mineral buildup from showerheads and keep them free-flowing put undiluted white vinegar in a plastic bag. Tie around the showerhead overnight. Scrub head and poke any loosened mineral deposits with a toothpick, rinse and enjoy your next shower.
To remove soap scum and mildew from plastic shower curtains and liners, fill the washing machine with warm water, 1 cup of white vinegar and your regular laundry detergent. Add the curtains, along with several old, light-colored towels. Run through complete cycle and rehang curtain immediately.
Add 2 or 3 tablespoons white vinegar along with your regular dishwashing liquid to cut grease on dishes and crystal.
Add ¼ cup of white vinegar to the washing machine during the final rinse to soften clothes and remove lint from dark clothes.
Apply, undiluted, to the skin with a cotton ball to deter bugs — they hate the way you taste, but the odor disappears immediately from your skin.
Neutralize pet urine odor with diluted white vinegar (25 percent vinegar to 75 percent water) sprayed on carpets. Always test in an inconspicuous spot before treating a large area.
Clean stainless steel sinks with a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Don’t let the foaming scare you –it works great!
Make a window cleaner in a spray bottle with ¼ cup of white vinegar added to 1 quart of water.
Make air freshener in a spray bottle with 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and 2 cup of water. After the foaming stops. Put on lid. Shake before using.
Clean vinyl floors with1/2 cup white vinegar to 1 gallon of warm water.
Keep drains free-flowing with ½ cup baking soda and ½ white vinegar poured down the drain on a monthly basis. After pouring in baking soda and vinegar, cover the drain for 15 minutes ( it will foam). Then flush with cold water.
Clean mirrors with a solution of half vinegar and half water. Wet a sponge, soft cloth, or paper towel, wash and then buff dry. Never spray water onto a mirror. Moisture that gets into the edges and behind mirrors ruins the silvering on the mirror, resulting in dark spots.
Spray vinegar on the underarms of clothes and let soak 15 to 30 minutes to deodorize and minimize underarm stains.
Make an excellent toilet cleaner with 1 cup borax and 1 cup vinegar. Pour the vinear over the stained area of the toilet, then sprinkle the borax over the vinegar. Soak for 2 hours and then brush and flush.

Twenty Mule Team® Borax
Now’s your chance to harness the power of 20 mules for general cleaning and laundry.
Borax is a natural additive that will boost the cleaning power of your regular laundry detergent and deodorize your laundry too. But don’t stop there. It is amazing for all kinds of cleaning.
Borax and water is a great cleaner for porcelain bathroom fixtures. Make a paste and rub well, then rinse.
Combine 2 parts baking soda, 1 part borax and 1 part hot water to make a fantastic grout cleaner. Mix together and using a brush, rub into the grout. Rinse well when you are done.
Remove hard-water rings from toilets by shutting the water off at the tank and flushing the toilet to remove as much water as possible. Spray the toilet bowl with heated white vinegar and then sprinkle on borax. Use a piece of fine drywall sandpaper to remove the ring. Turn the water back on and flush for a sparkling toilet bowl.
To clean white appliances combine 8 cups of water, 1 cup of chlorine bleach, ½ cup of baking soda, 2 tablespoons of borax. Wash white appliances thoroughly (using care around carpets and fabrics), rinse well and dry.
To keep dishwashers odor-free, use a damp sponge and some borax to wipe out the inside of the dishwasher, door and gaskets. No need to rinse, just do the next load of dishes.
To make your own dishwasher spot stopper combine the following ingredients in a container with a lid. 1 cup of borax and ½ cup of baking soda. To use: Add 1 teaspoon of the mixture to the dishwasher along with your regular dishwasher detergent.
Make your own non-abrasive scouring powder by combining 4 parts baking soda and 1 part borax. Store in a shaker container.
To clean vinyl floors mop with a mixture of 1 gallon of warm water and 1 tablespoon of borax. This will maintain the shine on floors, even those that are waxed.
To remove odor from training pants and socks, soak in a solution of 2 tablespoons of borax and 1 gallon of hot water. Soak for one hour prior to laundering. Dump entire bucket into washer and add detergent. Wash as usual.
To revive table linens add ½ cup of Borax to your laundry along with your detergent. It will boost your detergent to remove those mystery stains and remove that stale odor from storage.
To easily clean cloth hats and baseball caps put them on the top rack of the dishwasher. To avoid color fading fill the detergent cups with borax and allow to wash up to the dry cycle. Remove the hats prior to the dry cycle and sit on a pitcher or jar to dry, shaping as needed.
Make your own Queen’s Power Paste by lathering Fels Naptha Bar Soap on to stained laundry, fabric patio cushions etc. Work borax into this lather rubbing between your thumbs.Removes most hard-to-remove stains.

Lemon juice
Lemon juice is nature’s bleach and disinfectant.
Apply to clothes, undiluted, to remove fruit-based stains. Let soak for 30 minutes and then launder.
Remove rust from clothes by applying undiluted lemon juice and laying the garment in the sun. It disappears like magic.
Clean brass and copper with lemon juice and salt. Sprinkle salt on a half-lemon and rub metal, then rinse thoroughly. If you don’t have fresh lemons, you can also mix bottled lemon juice and salt.
Make a cleaner in a spray bottle with 2 cups of water, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, ½ teaspoon of liquid dish soap, 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of borax. Shake before using to clean any hard surface.
Apply lemon juice to chrome and buff to a shine.
As a bleach alternative, use ¼ cup of lemon juice and ¼ cup of white vinegar mixed in 1 gallon of warm water and soak clothes for 15 minutes prior to washing.
Remove stains from hands with lemon juice.
Bleach wooden breadboards by applying lemon juice and letting it sit overnight. Wash and rinse in the morning.

Club soda
Club soda is the best emergency spotter there is.
Keep club soda on hand to clean up spills on carpet and clothing. Remember to react as soon as possible to a spill. If you act fast, a spot shouldn’t become a stain. Club soda will remove red wine, coffee, tea, pop (yes even red pop!) Kool-Aid and any other spills you can think of.
Lift any solids carefully off carpet or clothes and then pour on the club soda, blotting with an old rag until all the color from the spill is removed. Don’t be afraid to really wet the carpet, it won’t hurt it … carpet goes through countless drippings in water as it is made. Blot carpet easily by folding a rag and standing on it, turning the rag as it absorbs moisture and discoloration from the spill. The carbonation in the club soda bring the offending spill to the surface so that you can blot it up, and the salts in it will help prevent staining.
If you spill on your clothes in a restaurant, ask for a little club soda or seltzer and use your napkin to blot the stain until it is removed.
At home, you can pour the club soda directly onto the spot, flushing it out. I have found that club soda will even work on many old stains, too.
Always keep several bottles on hand.

Baking soda
Baking soda is a great deodorizer, cleaner and mild abrasive.
Use as you would a soft-scrubbing product or cleanser in tubs and sinks. Keep food disposals fresh and free-flowing by putting the stopper in the disposal and adding 3 inches of warm water and a handful of baking soda. Turn on the disposal and let the water run out.
Remove perspiration stains and odor from clothing by applying a paste of baking soda and water and letting it soak 30 minutes prior to laundering. Mix 1 gallon of warm water and ¼ cut of baking soda.
Soak freshly washed socks in this for 30 minutes. Spin out in the washer (do not rinse out the solution), dry and you will have odor-eater socks.
Clean smudges on wallpaper with baking soda and water.
Remove crayon from hard surfaces with baking soda on a damp rag.
Use on any hard surface as a mild abrasive to remove stains.
Use as a bug killer for aphids. Use 1 ½ teaspoons of baking soda per pint of water and apply every 7 days.
To clean grout (any color) mix 3 cups of baking soda with 1 cup of warm water. Scrub grout with a brush and rinse.
Use baking soda on a damp cloth to polish silver.
To remove burnt food in casseroles, fill dish with hot water and add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and allow to soak.
To clean up pet vomit, sprinkle a heavy coating of baking soda. Let it absorb moisture and dry, then scoop or vacuum up. The baking soda will neutralize acids and help prevent stains. Follow with your favorite carpet spotter.
Remove heel marks from hard floors with a damp cloth and baking soda.
Clean screen stains and mineral deposits off windows by dipping a soft, wet cloth in baking soda and rubbing gently. Follow by washing windows as usual. Remove streaks and greasy film from car windshields with a thin paste of baking soda and water. Rinse well.
Put in the bottom of cat litter boxes to help eliminate odor. Put in a thin layer of baking soda and then add the litter as usual. This works with a clay or clumping variety.

Bailey Bush 1996-2009

My precious baby, Bailey, passed away not long ago...I know she was 'only a dog', but unless you have had an experience with an absolutely loyal, obedient, and wonderful companion like she was, you just can't understand...she slept at the foot of my bed all these years. She was my shadow and followed me everywhere. She mothered each of the dogs, groomed them, and kept them 'in line'...I still cry at times, but it's getting better...I picked her ashes on the day of my last post and I was really upset. I am so glad I was with her when she passed away; she knew that my daughter and I were there and she was comforted. I have a potter making me a special container for her ashes and she is doing it with love, this comforts me. I have three other dogs; I love them dearly, but Bailey was MY dog...she was my Miss Girl! I really appreciate you friends that emailed me and commented and I am sorry I have neglected my blog. I am surprised, since I have gotten so much pleasure from it...anyway, thank you...for caring.

Whew!

That's all I can say...first day of school! My Clinic looks like a bomb hit it! Our school is newly remodeled and all our 'stuff' was put in trailers, storage, etc...no shelves in Clinic...stuff everywhere!!! I am tired!!! Will post something interesting soon, I promise...please bear with me!

Vacation's almost over!!!

My summer vacation is almost over! School starts here on August 7th...a Friday. Go figure, a Friday, no less...anyway, I will get back in the groove of waking at 6:00 AM and getting to school by 7:10...bedtime at 10:00 - 11:00 at the very latest! I must be disciplined again...no more frittering away my time...the school year is very structured for me; actually, I don't mind some structure in my life. as someone with ADD, I do better with it. I have had quite a few changes these last few weeks; all will turn out to be good, I hope! This is my 10th year at my elementary school...I have seen many children grow up from Pre-K through 5th grade...many families with multiple children, each in their respective grades. I will see another group that I've known from Pre-K through 5th grade going on to the 6th grade in Middle School at the end of this school year. It's been great. School Nursing is such an important job...we do more than just bandaids on boo-boos. I take care of children with diabetes, seizures, asthma, spina bifida, osteomylitis, severe food allergies requiring Epi pens and dedicated lunch tables, broken bones; some schools have children requiring tube feedings, tracheostomy care, you name it...Our state, Georgia, and our Governor, Sonny Perdue, is trying to severely limit the amount of school nurses, here. The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) advocates that a nurse should not have more than 750 students under their care...luckily, our county has a nurse in every school, which is not the case in all the counties in Georgia. Some counties have lost their school nurses, or require one or two nurses for the whole county...do you want that for your children?

Yum Yum Yum Cajun Recipe from my friend Karen in Louisiana!

STUFFED BAKED CATFISH

The story behind this recipe goes like this:
One Saturday afternoon, we received a call from some old friends from Up North, who announced they were dropping in on us that night and were really hungry for Cajun seafood. A quick forage through our kitchen produced some catfish fillets and some crawfish tails. My thought was that the more fattening a dish is, the better I like it. So, we combined all the ingredients and came up with Stuffed Catfish Fillets... leave it to a Cajun to turn an otherwise low calorie dish into a meal that will get you offers to be the Weight Watchers poster child!
Our friends departed two pounds heavier but wouldn't leave until we gave them the recipe! Ed Roy (From the Tell me More Cookbook)

2 pounds catfish fillets
1 pound crawfish
1 stick butter
1 cup chopped green onions
1-2 (8 ounce)packages cream cheese
Tabasco
Salt, pepper, parsley, onion tops to taste

Season to taste and bake catfish uncovered on a Pam coated layer of foil until golden brown in a 500 degree oven. In a seperate pan, melt butter and saute' whole crawfish and green onions for about 10 minutes. Melt cream cheese into crawfish mixture and cook until bubbly.. Add other seasonings , pour on top op each fillet.. makes 4 servings..

Sisters on the Fly "Southern Fried"!!!

Here she is...new awning installed and ready to pack up and hit the road! This camp-out was a Sisters on the Fly event. The theme was 'Southern Fried' and the Southern Sisters put it on...

My little camper wanted to be Honkey-Tonk Angel, 'cause of her Shasta wings...I said, "okay".
This is Lazarus, the milk snake, and a little friend at the college where we made pottery out of clay from the area...

Sequoyah Caverns was a wonderful place to camp! I will be going back there again and again...check out their web page and see all they offer...http://www.sequoyahcaverns.com/index.htm. Roy and his family treated us like family...
This is a beautiful barn on the road to our campground...boy, did we have a ball!

Sisters on the Fly

Here's the picture of my little '68 Shasta caravan camper...Honkey-Tonk Angel. I originally named her Key-Lime Cowgirl, but she didn't like it. She felt that her little wings should get more attention; so, Honkey-Tonk Angel she is! She is going on the Sisters on the Fly Southern Fried Campout in Valley Head, Alabama. The campground is very close to the Caverns, where you can explore...I will be gem mining, canoeing, visiting Orbix Hot Glass at www.orbixhotglass.com, taking an herb class, having high tea, and many many more fun things, not the least is EATING some good stuff!!!

I will be out early in the morning painting and embellishing the outside of my camper...I will post pix when I am finished...You can be sure, there will be an apron painted on, somewhere! You can check out my Facebook page for more info as well! I am beyond excited, since I will be pulling my little caravan for the first time...on other Sisters camping trips, I have driven Hissy Fit, my big Navion camper...luxury, yes, but I will enjoy the kitchy fun of Honkey-Tonk Angel...that's why I joined SOTF in the first place! Join up and go with me to the Big Easy Giddy-up in New Orleans!!! You have time to join, 'get yo'self' a camper and decorate to your heart's content! It's coming up in April and it will be BIG! I'll see you there!

How 'bout a little eye candy! do any of you prefer your man in jockeys or boxers? I am of the boxer persuasion, myself...I don't have this particular pattern myself, but certainly wish I did...I just love it! I don't think I would ever make Himself any of these, but time will tell...heehee! Forgive me for my silliness, today...I just felt like it! And as my sister says, "I just am!"

Make a beautiful Hankerchief Apron...from Tip-Nut!

I absolutely love this apron tutorial...those of you that follow Tip-Nut may have already seen it. The drawings are great and the tutorial is very simple to follow. I love that you can even make this apron with squares of fabric, carefully cut exactly - I would use a rotary cutter and self-healing mat! When I have time, I am going to try this one for sure! The vintage hankie aprons are extremely hard to find and are expensive...if you make one, please let me know and send a pix! Himself and Daughter are at the Braves and Yankees game tonight! Peace reigns, tee-hee!

Soap Sally

When I was a little girl, back in the '50's, the story was told to children who misbehaved that "'Soap Sally' was going to get you"! Nobody, including my mother, knew where that came from...she said she had heard it all her life. When I googled it, I found that she was supposedly an ancient black lady who was a soap maker and it was said that she walked the streets of the mill villages kidnapping children who were unattended by an adult, then murdering them and using the fat in their bodies to make her soap.

After she died, it was said that when a small child misbehaved, Soap Sally would visit them in their dreams that night, and if they didn't wake up before she grabbed them in their dream, they would die before the morning, another victim of many. There were even reports of people having seen her many times for years, knowing full well that she was dead. Every time a child would go missing, two or three days later, Soap Sally could be seen, carrying her knapsack full of soap, scoping out the villages for another victim.

In those days, children seldom misbehaved more than once, for they were scared to death that 'Soap Sally' would get them if they didn't behave...also, the 'booger-man' was another one...we were sure scared of him, too! we were never told the scary story about an old woman who murdered children! It was enough the way the women in our family said the name! We terrified ourselves on hot summer nights, giggling and hiding and catching lightning bugs...

I will be gone a few days as I will be taking care of Mother, for her second surgery. If she gets along as well as she did last time, it will be a breeze! I don't have Internet access at her house, so it's hard to find a way to post and keep up with you, all my friends! So bear with me, and check back often..."I'LL BE BACK" - in the words of the Terminator!

Cowgirl Annie

Well, here she is...the photo leaves much to be desired, as it is raining! I forgot to take a picture of her little cowgirl boots...perhaps Jennifer, her new Mommy will do that and post it on her blog. This was a lot of fun and I am already thinking of new Annies to make...

Vintage Pillowcase Lunchbox Tutorial by OhFransson!

This is a great tutorial from Elizabeth Green @ OhFransson! www.ohfransson.com This tutorial describes how to make a vinyl-covered lunchbox bag and matching desk placemat from a 20x30 vintage percale pillowcase. The instructions are clear and the pictures just perfect to help you step by step! "The finished bag is about 6.5" high, by 8" wide by 6" deep. (The gathered top and handles make it a little taller.) The accompanying placemat is about 9x12, just the right size for your desk at work.
Of course, you don't have to use a pillowcase. A vintage sheet, curtain or even a contemporary cotton print would work just as well. If you choose a heavier fabric for the body and handles, you may want to forgo the iron-on vinyl and, similarly, if you want to forgo the iron-on vinyl, you probably want to choose a heavier fabric (or at least a heavy interfacing). The drawstring panels on top of the bag, the lining and the placemat will all be more successful if made from a lighter weight fabric like vintage percale or quilters cotton. I have trimmed my bags with rick-rack, but any 3/8 x 1/2 trim will do. If you're using a vintage pillowcase, you will need to use some kind of trim to cover a worn crease in the fabric."

She's on her way!

My little cowgirl Annie is on her way to my swap-partner! I joined Aunt Pittypat's Annie 2 Swap and this is my very first effort in making a doll! It was a lot of fun and a lot of pain! It was hard to make something this small...it was a great learning experience, though, and I really learned a lot. I will be making more Annie's in the future, that's for sure! I hope my little girl will make her new Mommy happy when she arrives in______________! I'm not tellin'! heehee

Pardon me for knitting...in Hooter's

Now, tell the truth! How many of you would be nice enough after a long hard day at work, to go with your husband and a bunch of rowdy men to Hooter's for a wing party? I was the designated driver...who could argue with that? All in all...I had a pretty good time, although, I was stared at openly! I can't believe nobody's knitted at Hooter's before...that's what the manager said, anyway! I am going to start a poll! Who has knitted at Hooter's before? I am anxiously awaiting your answer! I will give a prize to the first person who knits in Hooter's and posts the picture!!! Make sure you send me your email info and your blog address, if you have one. I have to see the 'proof in the pudding', so to speak! Knitters Unite! We will not be put down!!! We WILL knit in public, wherever we PLEASE...yeah!!!
